Competitive Recreation

Two weekends ago I went golfing at Overland. Score: 60
Yesterday I went golfing with AP at City Park. Score: 62
I’ve got some work in front of me if I’m going reach my goal of scoring under 100 on 18 holes (yes those scores above are for only 9 holes). We won at ultimate again on Monday. I had one goal and two assists. We remain undefeated with two games left in the season. I also signed up for summer league. Looks like a good summer for outdoor competitive recreation… and drinking beer.

Out Of The Girls Room And Into The Night

I just fininshed Out Of The Girls Room And Into The Night. Thisbe Nissen’s collection of short stories had me from the very beginning. After reading the first story, I set the book down on the bed and thought to myself, “I’m really gonna enjoy this book”. And I did, right through to the last page.

The novel consists of each character recounting love’s triumphs, failures, deceptions, delicacy, destruction, unpredictability, and enormity. Most of these stories concerned themselves with situations in which the heart is acting and the head is watching, thinking to itself, “I hope you know what your doing heart.” Although mostly young women, the characters span all types of demographics from dead-heads to anorexics to lesbians to college students to upper-class boarding school girls to a couple on their 25th anniversary. Most of the stories hang in those moments when we are feeling uncomfortable in our own skin, or are realizing that the skin we thought we had on is not what we had thought it was originally.

The majority of the stories that the author offers in this collection are easily consumed and have underdeveloped or uncomplicated plot lines. But it was their ability to engage me emotionally and my ability to relate to them that has made the novel so successful with me. I found myself only reading a couple stories at a time because a wanted them to sink in and marinate them for a while before they were discarded for the next set of stories. I would have given it five stars if the characters and plot lines were a little more developed. However, I highly recommend this collection.

CC’s And Top Speeds

I decided to go to the going away party on Friday (the exhibit will be open for a while yet). It was pretty fun. Lots of motorcycle gear-heads there. You know the type: constant talk of cc’s and top speeds but alright guys. I spent most the night talking with the host’s new girlfriend and one of her friends. The night’s main event was the Tampico Challenge (who can drink a gallon of Tampico the fastest) which was a gross display of over consumption and excess for no other reason than to… I don’t know. Then I went out to the bars in Lodo and shot pool and tried my hand at flirting with the drunks.

For most of the remainder of the weekend I ran errands because it will be a busy week with appointments and whatnot. I went to my moms for dinner on Sunday. I watched Personal Velocity and Scooby Doo this weekend, which were great (go see it!) and pretty crappy respectively.

The Spawn Of Our Ramblings

The following poems were created using Rob’s site, my journal, and your comments. From the mingling of our musings a poetic child is born. The spawn of our ramblings spills forth. We wax on. The offspring of heated and impassioned ruminations.

Or maybe they’re just lame-ass word salads.

I hope you enjoy them either way.

Surfing The Interweb

It’s been a fairly lame week. We won at ultimate and lost at trivia again. On Tuesday I spent a couple hours at my wateringhole. The rest of the week has been spent surfing the interweb and laying around. Last night I talked to Chevy for a while on instant messanger. I have little experience with instant messenger and it was wierd but cool talking to a stranger like that.

Tonight I either go to a going away party for somebody I don’t really know (but I will know some of the people there) or maybe to this.

M&M Story

Once, whilst munching on a handful on m&m’s, I turned to my friend Uncle Squiggly (not a real uncle, just a nick name) and intending to throw an m&m into the air and catch it in my mouth, I said “Hey Squiggly, can you do this?” I then proceeded to tilt my head skyward and throw the m&m into the air. But instead of catching it in my mouth, it landed with a sticky thud in the little cleft of my upper lip, just below the tip of my nose. “No, I don’t think I can,” he replied.
