A Handful Of Maraschino Cherries
I thought I was going to throw up on the elevator this morning.
While talking on the phone last night I was getting drunk with the person on the other line. I had never done this before. I mean, I’ve had a few drinks while talking on the phone, and we all know I’ve done my fair share of drunk-dialing. But never before have I intentionally slung a bunch back knowing the person on the other end was doing the same thing. And we were doing it together. I was drinking bourbon and cokes. And I accidentally hung the phone every time I went in the kitchen to fix another.
When I got off the phone Sabrina called. I was already half-tanked. She wanted to know if I wanted to go out for drinks. We went to Pasquinins for $5 pitchers of Sangrias. A Greek salad was all I had for dinner. This was a mistake (not eating dinner that is. Or maybe the whole thing. I don’t know). After some light banter and a few drinks and a handful of maraschino cherries, Sabrina took me home.
I went out to the bar and had another beer.
I slept in. Turned off my alarm. And got out of bed a half-hour late. I had a wicked hangover: cottonmouth, headache, upset stomach, and just plane old tired.
After the doors shut I pressed #34. And the elevator started that fast up and down motion that makes your stomach flip. I was able to ride it out by wrapping my arms around my abdomen and staring at the floor, but it was close. I’m doing much better now.
The world looks mighty good to me.

sometimes getting drunk with someone on the phone is all you wanna do. but it cant be just anyone.

getting drunk on the phone is a blast. but its real weird when you can not exactly remember what you did and the oerson you were talking to is in another city and has no idea what you did.
