New York Public Library Has Over 670,000 Digitized Items And Some Very Cool Tools To Access Them

Earlier this week the New York Public Library enhanced access to over 670,000 digitized files in its massive database of digital collections. This includes access to free books, paintings, newspaper clippings, digitized streaming video, prints, botanical illustrations, photographs, maps, manuscripts, sheet music, menus, hundreds of thousands of public domain images, and more. Some of the documents date back as far as the 11th century

Best of all, NYPL has created some really cool tools to search, access and utilize the collection.

All of the Public Domain items are “No permission required. No restrictions on use.” They digitized these items specifically so that people will reuse and remix for your personal projects. So much so that NYPL announced the NYPL Labs PAID Remix Residency for artists, information designers, and software developers that is designed to spur transformative and interesting new uses for their digital collections. If that isn’t enough NYPL is adding high-quality machine-readable metadata to the hundreds of thousands of assets and providing an API!

Well done, NYPL. Go forth and reuse!

I, For One, Welcome Our New Robot Overlords

My buddy Howard has posted version 1.9 of his “For the Love of Our Robot Overlords Mix” over at his blog. It a great mix of songs all about robots. The heart of the mix is a suite of songs about female lovebots, but collection also includes themes such as Man Becomes Robot and Robot As Pet. Give it a Listen and check out the track list below. Then go grab your copy before the robots take over or they’ll vaporize you with their heat ray.

Z-Trip’s All Access (A Beastie Boys Megamix)

The passing of MCA has me thinking about the Beastie Boys and reminded me of this 23 minute Megamix by Z-Trip you can stream below. Z-Trip says:

“I was stoked and humbled when asked to do this mix. I’ve been a fan of The Beasties since I first heard Mr Magic interview them on WBLS in NY. I included some of my favorites as well as stuff off the new album. All remixed. It’s a Trip, it’s gotta funky beat, and you can bug out to it.”

DJ Format C has also put together a pretty good Beastie Boys mix you can stream below. The tracklist can be found here.

All Together Now: Every Beatles Song Played All At Once

All together Now, created by DJ Ramjac, is a mash-up of every Beatles tune ever recorded. All of the songs are played together, sequenced in order of length, with the longest starting first and all 226 tunes ending together. The last two minutes are absolutely chaotic. The track is more conceptually interesting than musically enjoyable and probably something I’ll only ever listen to once but I wanted to share with you all here.

If your interested in something similar but more accessible try this Beatles Mashup Medley or the Goldberg Variations Variations

Full Double Rainbow Songs

I’m sure you have seen Hungrybear9562’s incredibly emotional and hilarious “Mountain Giant Double Rainbow” video by this point. If you haven’t, go watch it now! Trust me it’s worth the three and a half minutes of your life that it will cost.

What you might not know, is that there are a handful of musical remixes already created. Check them out below:

The Gregory Brothers of Auto-Tune the News fame have turned the new famous video into one of their clever overly autotuned songs. The ditty finishes with a vocal rendition from the band.
Double Rainbow Song

“Somewhere Over The Double Rainbow” is the best remix to date in my opinion. Created by James Urbaniak, it’s a mashup with Kermit the frog’s “Rainbow Connection”. Brilliant!
Somewhere Over The Double Rainbow

“Auto Tune The Rainbow” is a pretty horrible remix (and the only one actually trying to make a buck off this) slapped together by Mason VanValin.
Auto Tune The Rainbow

Twin Cities-based producer Gigamesh has just released a remix called “It’s So Intense.” Gigamesh pushes past the meme and turns it into a surprisingly listenable little dance jam.
It’s So Intense

The game designers over at Rockethands created Double Rainbow (All The Way). I like the 70’s rock vibe it has. It’s a lot more organic than any of the others too. Which is nice.
Double Rainbow (All The Way)

Lastly we have the youtube doubler of “Giant Double Rainbow” mashed up with porn music. It actually kinda works in a gross sort of way.

If you find Yosemitebear Mountain Giant (Paul Vasquez) intriguing, you might want to check out the short history and interview with him over at Urlesque.

True Love Will Find You In The End

Mates Of State has a new video out for their cover of Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You In The End”. The single can be found on their new album “Crushes – The Covers Mix Tape”. The video was made in one day by recoding a live performance of the song in their basement and the projecting the that recording onto various surfaces around New York City. Those projections were then filmed by a ABC news crew. That footage was then edited and dubbed to the music. The result is the great video seen below. It’s HD, so click it full screen style.

You can currently stream the entire new album at their website, or just spend the measly five bucks and own the whole thing. After all of these years, the duo still maintain their high velocity for throat pounding energetic pop.

A video of the making of the video can be found after the jump.

Billy Mays Is A Sad Robot – Part II

I’ve said it before but I think this really proves it. Billy Mays really is a sad robot. The video below was created by John Boswell, the same guy who puts together all of those great Symphony Of Science Videos that have been going around the internet lately.

There is something about this Kaboom commercial that is filtered through auto-tune that I really enjoy. It was created by CastOutTheSelf, and although it may not be quite as funny as Jabo0ody’s dubs, I like it better.

This Kaboom commercial is apparently run at 140 BPM. I wonder if there have been and studies done to determine the perfect beats per minute for shysters to use for there sing-song pitches? Does the lyrical styling of Billy May’s script help us tune into the commercial?

Workin’ It!

These girls are WORKIN’ IT.

I created this video last night. The music is a song called “Zukunft” by the Estonian band Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot, which I also discovered while surfing around the web last night. Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot’s newest release “Compensator For The Accelerator” is available for download for free (as in beer) on their website, which, of course, is worth an additional 100 cool points. Their cover art states:

We praise the mp3 for giving the creative mind an opportunity to unleash itself from the established hierarchies of music distribution and bypass spoonfeeding by opinion leaders.

The website also contains a .pdf download of the cover and CD art that actually folds into a sleeve that will protectively hold your newly burnt disk. Anyways, cool music, nice design, and great attitude.

The video is of Gwen Verdon (Cacoon anyone?) shaking it to a dance choreographed by her husband, the talented Bob Fosse. The original dance was choreographed to a song called “Mexican Breakfast” by Pat Williams. As you can see Gwen really knew how to move and Fosse was way ahead of his time. Seriously, did Bob Fosse invent the bootyquake? Now go rent “All That Jazz” and “Caberet”, or just watch these videos.

As a bonus, here are three additional Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot songs:
Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot – Nina Robots That Shoot Laser Beams And Stuff
Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot – The Ride Ripoff
Fuck Yuo I Am A Robot – T.A.T.U. Remix
