A Young Globular Cluster

October 27, 2016 by hubs Leave a Comment

Youthful NGC 362 Globular Cluster

Earlier this week NASA released this dazzling image of NGC 362. It is one of about 150 known globular clusters on the outskirts of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. Globular clusters are giant spheres that contain hundreds of thousands of stars and reside in the outskirts of galaxies. The ESA says NGC 362 is unusual:

By studying the different elements present within individual stars in NGC 362, astronomers discovered that the cluster boasts a surprisingly high metal content, indicating that it is younger than expected. Although most globular clusters are much older than the majority of stars in their host galaxy, NGC 362 bucks the trend, with an age lying between 10 and 11 billion years old. For reference, the age of the Milky Way is estimated to be above 13 billion years.

This image, in which you can view many of NGC 362’s individual stars, was taken by Hubble’s Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) If you want a new desktop image, here’s the 42 MB full-size original (it will automatically download).

Call Me A Hole

Call Me A Hole

This Nine Inch Nails/Carly Rae Jepsen mashup is splendid. The juxtaposition is jarring and yet they somehow fit together perfectly. I hate it and love it at the same time.

pomDeter was the original creator of this beauty but it has been pulled from all his accounts so I’m posting it here for your listening enjoyment.

Parent-Friendly Kids Music (For Free!)

March 30, 2015 by hubs Leave a Comment

This weekend I downloaded this new, and free, children’s album For Kids By Kids: Songs From Iowa Rock City from the Iowa City Public Library. The entire family enjoyed listening to it.

For Kids and By Kids mixes moods and musical styles—from roots music, for which Iowa City is known, to punk, polka, folk, hip-hop, and synth-pop. It not only crosses musical genres, but also generations … Dozens of youths appear on For Kids and By Kids, and we hope that the many more who hear this album will be inspired to pick up an instrument, form their own bands, or do something else creative.

All of the songs are original, spanning all types of genres and moods. The lyrics are not condescending, gratingly repetitive, or infantile. I’m sure we’ll be breaking this one out for listens all summer.

What’s Not To Like?

October 25, 2012 by hubs Leave a Comment

I definitely like this:

I Like What I See is a Chrome extension to automatically click all “Like” links on Facebook. When you visit Facebook, click the thumbs up in the extension bar and start scrolling and liking. Liking and scrolling. Every instance of the word “Like” will be clicked. Don’t worry, Facebook is a fun place full of all of the stuff you like.

I liked what I saw when I saw Steven Klise’s “I Like what I See” Chrome extension. You might like it to, so I packaged it up for your easy consumption.

  1. First click here to download the extension.
  2. Open your Chrome Extension Manager (by typing chrome://extensions into your address bar)
  3. Drag the file you downloaded in step one onto your extension page.
  4. Click Add

Z-Trip’s All Access (A Beastie Boys Megamix)

May 4, 2012 by hubs 4 Comments

The passing of MCA has me thinking about the Beastie Boys and reminded me of this 23 minute Megamix by Z-Trip you can stream below. Z-Trip says:

“I was stoked and humbled when asked to do this mix. I’ve been a fan of The Beasties since I first heard Mr Magic interview them on WBLS in NY. I included some of my favorites as well as stuff off the new album. All remixed. It’s a Trip, it’s gotta funky beat, and you can bug out to it.”

All Access (A Beastie Boys Megamix)

DJ Format C has also put together a pretty good Beastie Boys mix you can stream below. The tracklist can be found here.
